Other skills: The incumbent has worked for a Canadian major Mining and Aluminum manufacturing company (ALCAN) founded in 1902. The subsidiary of ALCAN in India named Indian Aluminum Company Limited, where the incumbent worked, was founded in 1939. The company had a very strong ethical and employee friendly policies. I worked for almost 25 years for the company from 1976 to 2000 till it was acquired by Hindalco industries, an Aditya Birla Group Company in the year 2000. Was involved in the following, in one or other capacity, as a part of the senior management team member i).Labor Practices: The Company used to follow a collective bargaining system with the representatives of the workers from the days when this concept was hardly known to industries in India. As a part of collective bargaining a 3 years agreement used to be signed which was the corner stone of all labor related polices. The agreement included: Fair wages for fair work, mutually negotiated and agreed upon Highly subsided food in canteen with very high nutrient value (Meat, Eggs, bread, Milk included) supervised by a canteen committee with members from both union and management Highly subsidized ration for each member of a family subject to a max of 6 members in a family. No gender discrimination. Equal pay for both male and female employees Special care for women employees, their infants and expectant mothers with special provisos for long leave during and after the pregnancy No employment of child labor A well documented employee grievance handling procedure. In case an occasional serious disciplinary action had to be taken for serious offences, a fair and independent internal court of enquiry used to be held before the decision is taken for punishment. The enquiry was subject to judicial review in case an employee chooses to opt for judicial review by the courts. A well documented employee conduct code which was a part of employment terms this also included a specific chapter on sexual harassment and work place behavior. Full medical exegeses for all employees including the family were borne by the company even if it involved major surgical intervention. A Medical Officer and trained nurse were on 24x7 duty, especially to visit villages for health care and to handle emergencies related to dependents of employees, the area being a tribal belt with hardly any state Govt. infrastructure related to health care. In case an employee died while in service for whatever reasons, the company provided an employment to the first child of the employee, if of employable age. For other retired employees, a roaster was maintained and as and when their turn came, their eldest dependent child will be employed. Employee’s children were sponsored for various Technical Training programs to enhance their employability and income generation capacity. ii) Community care: Even during 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, when hardly any one new about CSR, the company used to run the following program for community development: • General health care by a Medical Officer and a trained nurse with 24x7 ambulance at hand • Health care for expectant mothers and infant • Spud ding wells in villages ,having water scarcity • Grants for new school buildings including payment of a part of salary of teachers • Clean water, school uniforms and books for school children • De addiction program for alcohol abuse which is still a major social issue in tribal belts • Employment generation schemes with forest products as the base ,including training and other support for marketing, by experts appointed by the company as consultants • Support to preserve forest wealth and green cover by providing subsidized coal to some of the villages, as a fuel. • Sustaining cultural moorings of tribe’s iii) International Health, Safety & Environment experience: Due to its association with ALCAN of Canada(Aluminum Corporation of Canada Limited) , the company in India had a very strong EHS culture. ALCAN had a special standard on EHS named as ASHES (Alcan Health, Safety & Environment System) based on British EHS standards BS 8800 and BS7750. All the manufacturing units of ALCAN in almost 35 countries and 120 operating units used to be audited once in 3 years by a team of EHS professionals appointed by ALCAN corporate. In 1990’ the incumbent was a member of ASHES audit global team and visited a number of countries for audit (Ireland, Canada, Australia, Jamaica etc). The implementation of the recommendations of this audit were reviewed by the Managing director himself once in 6 months ,at site, in each manufacturing unit. The company used to spend much more than 2% of its net profits those days on community development which is now being legislated by Indian Parliament ,as a mandatory requirement for every corporate. The company was highly respected in government circles, business community and the community at large, for its benevolent policies. 9.
